The SUNY Geneseo men's track team has been an intercollegiate sport since 1970. Head coach Dave Prevosti is a 1996 graduate of Roberts Wesleyan and is in his fifth season. The program was started by Paul Evans and in 1980, Rich Ceronie added the women's program as well as participating for the first time in indoor competition.
In 2009, the women's indoor track team highlighted their season with a third place finish at the SUNYAC championships. The Knights scored 114 points to finish behind champion Buffalo State’s 124 and Brockport’s 118. Senior Laura Iafrati and first year Alyssa Smith earned first team All-SUNYAC recognition. Iafrati won the 5,000 meters and Smith captured the mile run. Junior Erin Marks garnered second team All-SUNYAC after placing second in the mile run and the Distance Medley Relay team of Iafrati, Brittany Frankel, Sam Legere and Smith placed first at the conference meet.
In 2009, the men's indoor track team capped their season with second place team finish at the SUNYAC meet with 104.50 points to champion Cortland’s 117. Sophomore Mark Streb earned first team All-SUNYAC after winning the mile run at the conference meet and went on to place second in the event at the ECAC Division III championships. Classmate Ryan O’Connor placed second in the 3,000 meters and junior Ken Wickey finished second in the shot put to each earn second team All-SUNYAC honors.
In 2009, Prevosti mentored the women's outdoor track and field team to a third place finish at the 2009 SUNYAC Outdoor championships at Oneonta with 130.50 points. Brockport won the competition with 176 points and Cortland was second with 138. Senior Julie Thering highlighted the finishes with a second place, NCAA provisional distance of 49.48 meters in the hammer throw and a third place toss of 11.35 meters in the shot put. Senior Laura Iafrati won the 10,000 meters with a time of 38:28.80, while Alice Buskus captured a fourth place in the long jump with a distance of 5.12 meters. On Saturday, junior Erin Marks won the 1,500 meters in 4:45.19 and first year Alyssa Smith won the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:25.74. Junior Sandra Goettelman posted a second to Marks in the 1,500 in 4:48.61 and finished third in the 5,000 meters in 18:18.89. Junior Kristin Shumway was third in the triple jump with a leap of 10.74 meters, first year Sam Legere crossed third in the 800 in 2:19.82 and Thering placed third in the discus with 36.09 meters. At the ECAC championships, Geneseo finished 40th of 55 teams as Iafrati provided the lone five points with a 37:30.50 in the 10,000 meters.
In 2009, sophomore Mike McManus highlighted the men's outdoor track and field season by qualifying for the NCAA Division III championships at Marietta College in Ohio, where he placed 14th with a height of 1.98 meters in the high jump. Earlier, Geneseo embarked on the championship portion of the schedule by travelling to Oneonta for the SUNYAC championships, where they won their third overall SUNYAC title with 171 points to Cortland's 154.5. Geneseo captured the outdoor title in 2003 and 2006. McManus highlighted the Friday performances by finishing first in the high jump with an NCAA provisional height of 2.02 meters. Junior Andrew Sorrento qualified provisionally for the national meet with a second place distance of 52.55 meters in the hammer throw. Senior Ryan Mulcahy placed second in the 10,000 meters with a time of 32:28.47 and junior Jesse Berube finished fourth in the event in 32:59.64. In the shot put, Geneseo's Ken Wickey placed third with a toss of 14.10 meters and sophomore Eric Rickman finished fourth with a 13.98-meter mark. On Saturday, Geneseo posted a pair of first place performances as John Brotsch won the 400 meters in 49.31 and Mark Streb paced the 1,500 meters in 3:55.56. The Knights got second place performances from Ryan Joyce in the triple jump (13.66 m) and Lee Berube in the 5,000 meters (15:03.46), while Will Haskell and Mulcahy placed 2-3 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:36.12 and 9:38.67, respectively. Senior Craig Harlacher garnered third in both the 100 (11.29) and 200 (22.52) meter dashes and John Gammariello placed third in the 800 meters in 1:56.81. At the ECAC championships, Geneseo placed ninth of 56 scoring teams with 28 points as McManus won the high jump with an NCAA provisional qualifying height of 2.05 meters and Haskell placed second in the steeplechase with a time of 9:22.25. |
