Women's Equestrian Preview 2009-10
Head coach Kim Sanford (Delhi, '77) begins her sixth season at the helm after aiding Geneseo to a fifth place finish out of 14 teams in zone two, region two of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association in 2008-09.
Each event is divided into classifications, with the most skilled riders performing "on the flat" and "over fences" in the Open, Intermediate and Novice Divisions, and only "on the flat" in Advanced Walk, Trot, Canter (WTC), Beginner WTC and Walk/Trot.
Sanford begins the season with just one of six regional riders returning to the roster as senior Amyrose Lomele (Huntington) qualified for the regionals in the Novice class last year. Lomele and junior Ashley Kresge (Port Crane/Chenango Forks) move to the Intermediate class this season.
Geneseo returns sophomores Julianne Pangal (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) and Katie Roberts (Penfield) to the Open class, with junior Katie Crawford (Webster/Thomas) and Ryan Lefkowitz (New Rochelle) joining the pair.
Geneseo returns Nicole Saxman (Plainview/JFK) and Karina Stamatis (Victor/Fairport) to the Novice class, where five newcomers, sophomores Julianne Batelli (Montgomery/Burke Catholic) and Holly Schimpf (Walworth/Wayne) and first years Emily Oswald (Penn Yan/Marcus Whitman), Julie Philipson (Victor) and Lauren Weisberg (Ardsley) join the team.
Geneseo appears loaded in the Advanced WTC class. Sophomores Ashley Grove (Rochester/Wilson) and Stephanie Iasiello (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) return to the class, while newcomers include sophomore Casey Williamson (Shortsville/Red Jacket) and first years April Krenzer (Livonia), April Lenhard (Webster/The Harley School) and Kristin Rabb (Fairport).
Senior Irene Bayly (Petersburg/Mt. Greylock) advances to the beginner WTC class, which returns junior Carla Stephan (East Greenbush/Columbia) and sophomore Erin Moran (Hopewell Junction/John Jay).
Sophomore Caroline Patton (Latham/Shaker) begins the season as the lone Walk/Trot rider.
The Knights will participate in eight shows this season beginning on Saturday, October 24 at the RIT show at Lehman Farms and concluding their regular season on February 28, 2010 at St. Lawrence. Geneseo is slated to host two shows at Lehman Farms, Sunday, October 25 and Sunday, November 15.
